Food for thought- UPSC (IAS) prelims special

  1. In spite of sun rays reaching the earth from above, why does the temperature decreases with height (in the troposphere)?
  1. Atmosphere is heated by long wave or short wave radiation? (related to Q1)
  2. Global warming is caused by trapping of outgoing radiation by greenhouse gases. This radiation is longwave radiation or shortwave radiation?
  1. One of the effects of global warming is sea level rise. How does the global warming cause sea level rise?
  2. Coriolis force causes winds to move to its right in the northern hemisphere and to its left in the southern hemisphere( Ferrell's law). Since it is a force, it has to have a cause. What causes this force? Is it a real force or apparent (fictitious) force?

  1. question 4:some extra points.

Global warming not only affects the climate change but a study has revealed that due to this change the nutrients present in the crops like iron and zinc are diminishing. For a country like India and others who have a huge population this is a serious concern.Food security without nutrients will be will not help out.

  2. 4. Increased gaseous contents like CO2 restricts the outgoing t=radiation from earth and thus increasing the warmth of the earth leading to increase of sea level and melting of glaciers.
    5. Coriolis force is due to the rotation of Earth. it is a fictitious force i guess.

    1. yes Coriolis force is fictitious, not the real force. This is very important nuance. Force is not applied on the object by anything but it appears (does not really travel in curved path) to be curved to an observer because of earths rotation.
